Semi-Finals - Deer Park Tigers 18 - LaPorte Texans 6

LaPorte Texans 6 Deer Park Tigers 18

It was a sudden end to a fantastic season. Our LaPorte Texans came in with high hopes of taming the Deer Park Tigers and playing in the Super Bowl held in Bulldog stadium this year, but it was not to be.

The Tigers physically dominated our Texans on this day. It truly was just their day. During the season we played teams that were bigger and stronger than us, but we were able to use skill, brains and great coaching to achieve victory. Deer Park - at least on this day - gave us an obstacle we simply were not able to overcome. Congratulations to the boys and their Coaching Staff. I hope they do well in the Super Bowl on December 4th.

Here are my end of the year observations. First, we have and excellent group of men that coach our boys. I have commented on them in newsletters, but after seeing all of the teams through the year, I wouldn't trade our coaching staff for any of them. They care about the boys. They care about winning. But they care most about seeing these boys turn into great young men. As parents, my wife and I are proud to be affiliated with the men who lead and coach the Sophomore LaPorte Texans. Thanks Coach Ron to you and your staff for a great year!

Secondly, we have some great parents. The fun and fellowship that we have had at games and practices are almost as rewarding as the games themselves. Each year we think that the parents can't get any better - but each year they seem to. Playing 12 other teams through the year also gives you insights to other parents and their teams. Maybe I am biased, but it seems to me that our parents were the best at supporting the boys in every part of the game. I think - I hope - we strive - to make the Texans organization one that is characterized by dignity and class.

For the most part - there were a couple of minor exceptions - our parents cheered our boys, lifting them up with positive words of encouragement helping our boys to accomplish great things.

Thirdly, I am going to miss all of this. My Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays just won't be the same for a while. And while I will miss going to the Super Bowl, I will miss just as much the fun that we had as a Texan Family during practices and at games.

Finally, again congratulations to the Deer Park Tigers. You accomplished with 11 other teams could not. You beat the Texans. (smile) You should be proud. Prepare for the Super Bowl - but understand, we are looking forward to seeing you again next year.

Thanks Texans Parents. Looking forward to seeing the boys in the pads in August!

Quarter Finals: LaPorte Texans -vs- Hitchcock Red Raiders

Quarter Finals - LaPorte Texans 18 - Hitchcock Red Raiders 12

PLAYOFFS: LaPorte Texans –vs- Hitchcock Red Raiders

Victory 18-12 Season Record – 11 wins 0 losses

Man oh man! Has Hitchcock’s Number 2 stopped zig-zagging across the field yet? Pins and needles are how you describe a game like the Sophomore Texans had against the Hitchcock Red Raiders this last Saturday. Even on Hitchcock’s last offensive play – until big brute Eric Kendzoir wrapped his arms around “The Rock” – it was hard to breathe! They may have had a great team, but the Sophomore Texans were better! Coach Ron and Coach Steve were walking to their cars after the game when one of the Hitchcock parents stopped them and said, “We hate to loose, but we lost to a better team today. Your team is the most disciplined team we have ever played!” I think I almost saw Coach Ron blush! What a compliment!

The Texans Defense was spectacular! They stayed home all day long containing the speed of the Hitchcock Red Raiders. It had been just a few days earlier when the Coaches and some of the Dad’s saw defensive breakdowns by the Red Raider opponents that led to several long and winding touchdown runs. But because of great coaching and great execution, the Texans Defense held the potent Red Raider offense to one touchdown. Special Teams executed well except for one kick-off coverage slip-up that allowed number 6 to rumble in for a touchdown. Coach Mark is going to do everything possible this week during practices to keep that from happening again.

The Texans Offense was amazing. Long, time-consuming drives ate up the clock and kept the ball away from Hitchcock. Coach Rae’s HAWGS continued to open hole after hole for the backs to rumble through. The passing game loosened up the Hitchcock defense to allow plenty of room for the Texans to move the ball.

Next up is the Deer Park Tigers. The Tigers enter the game with 10 wins and 2 losses with their losses being to the Clear Lake Space Raiders and an early season loss to the Hitchcock Red Raiders. While the Tigers don’t have the quickness of the Red Raiders, they are well coached and disciplined. It will be a great game this Saturday at 2:00.

LaPorte Texans -vs- Deer Park Rams

Week Ten: LaPorte Texans –vs- Deer Park Rams

Victory 37-0 - Season Record – 10 wins 0 losses

What a great way to end an outstanding regular season!!! Our Sophomore Texans finished their perfect regular season with 10 victories and no losses. During the season, our Texans outscored the opponents 249 – 6! That 6 games scoreless streak was solidified by Lupe Gonzales’never give up” attitude as he caught the Rams quarterback from behind after a 45 yard scamper to the Texans 5 yard line. Great job Lupe! Then the Texans Wrecking Crew held the hapless Rams to minus 2 yards on their next 4 carries! Coach Steve was proud of his defense! Just for an encore, the Wrecking Crew Defense held the Rams out of the end zone after a Texan turnover on their own 15 yard line. What an outstanding defense!

The Texan Offense was just as outstanding! David Terrebonne scampered 93 yards for the second touchdown of the game. Nathan Redd threw a great downfield block to spring him loose as he cruised down the sideline. (All those laps around Texan Field during practice seemed to pay off!) Not satisfied with just a great defensive play, Lupe Gonzales scored on a 40 yard play extending the Texans lead over the Rams. Nathan Redd scored on runs of 20, 58, 28 and 40 yards – with a bone crushing hit on an unsuspecting Ram on the way to his 4th touchdown! Austin Forkin had a catch for 16 yards to extend a drive early in the game. Caleb Longoria ripped the Ram defense for 9 yards on a reverse that left the Rams not knowing who to tackle! Coach Rae’s HAWGS paved the way for the “Glory Boys” as they ripped holes all through the Rams Defense. Some of those holes were so big that even Coach Rae could have scored through them! The only complaint I heard all day was from Coach Rae wanting his HAWGS to share in carrying the ball on some of the extra point attempts! (smile)

It was great to see Tyler Bozant, Alec Alvarado, Justin Flores and Blake Gamez carrying the ball on extra point attempts! Dustin Escobar had some carries late in the game just showing how deep the Texans are on both sides of the ball. Thanks Coaches for spreading the wealth!

Now to the Playoffs. After an incredible game in which the Deer Park Tigers defeated the Hitchcock Red Raiders 35-32, our first round playoff opponent has been determined. The Texans will be playing the Hitchcock Red Raiders this Saturday at 12:30 at the Deer Park North Campus.

Many of the Texans were at the Deer Park/Hitchcock game Tuesday Evening. On display at the end of the game was passion run amok by the participant’s parents. Please remember to cheer loudly this Saturday, but represent the Texan Family with sportsmanship and class. Don’t be drawn into foolish behavior!

Show dignity and grace! It’s the Texan Way!

LaPorte Texans -vs- Alvin Yellow Jackets

LaPorte Texans - 19 Alvin Yellow Jackets - 0

Week Nine: LaPorte Texans –vs- Alvin Yellow Jackets

Victory 19-0 Season Record – 9 wins 0 losses

The Yellow Jackets flew into Texans Stadium with an upset on their minds, but the Texans fast start changed their thinking very fast! After recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff, the Texans scored on a 5 play drive covering 35 yards. The drive was highlighted by an 18 yard pass from David Terrebonne to Caleb Longoria. It seemed that the Texans were off and running, especially when Nathan Redd recovered the ensuing kickoff on the Yellow Jacket 40 yard line, but the Texan drive stalled on the Yellow Jacket 1 yard line after 2 bobbles on handoffs. This was very uncharacteristic of the Texans, but it happened to them twice in this game.

The Defense kept the Yellow Jackets penned on the Texans end of the field with teeth rattling tackles from a swarming defense. Although many of the adults in the stands were fooled by the slight of hand by the Yellow Jacket quarterback and backfield, the Texan defense seemed to have no problem finding the ball. The Yellow Jackets turned the ball over on downs to the Texans on their own 23 yard line. David Terrebonne pitched the ball to Nathan Redd and he followed bone jarring blocks by Eric Kendzior and Lupe Gonzales for the touchdown run. Nathan Redd was covered with swarming Yellow Jackets on the last 7 yards of his touchdown run!

In the third quarter, there was a Deep Freeze sighting! Paul Bob, aka the “Deep Freeze” plowed his way through a tough Yellow Jacket defense for 4 yards! It was a toss up who was the most excited, Paul Bob, the rest of the Team, or the Coaching Staff on the Sideline! Those of my vintage were having flashbacks to “Refrigerator Perry!” (Kids, ask the coaches to explain!)

The Texans had another drive stall on the Yellow Jacket 1 yard line, but again, the incredible Texan defense kept the Yellow Jackets penned on their end of the field. Coach Steve’s defense kept its scoreless streak in tack. Do you realize that in 36 quarters of football, the Texans opposition has scored only 1 touchdown? Amazing, this defense has given up only 1 touchdown all season long! Way to go guys!

On the last play of the game, a determined Nathan Redd scampered around the right side for a 16 yard touchdown run. This ran the final score of the Yellow Jacket game to 19-0. What a great day for the Texans multi-dimensional offense!

This week we will be heading to play the Deer Park Rams who would like nothing better than to end a disappointing season by taking down our LaPorte Texans. The only thing that stands between an undefeated regular season and the Texans are these Rams. Boys! Let’s take it to them and end up 10-0 and playoff bound!

LaPorte Texans -vs- Clear Lake Falcons

LaPorte Texans 27 Clear Lake Falcons 0

Week Eight: LaPorte Texans –vs- Clear Lake Falcons

Victory 27-0 Season Record – 8 wins 0 losses

All one can say is WOW! What an incredible performance by the UNDEFEATED SOPHOMORE LAPORTE TEXANS! This truly was a statement game – and the boys made a statement that we heard around the league. One can only imagine what other teams (Space Raiders) thought when they saw a 27-0 plucking of the Clear Lake Falcons.

The pace of the game was settled when the Falcons were down 14-0 and had only run 2 offensive plays with the Texans taking the ball away from them on both plays! The Texans Defense was relentless. Mason Lee had the game of his life with 6 tackles (and a nice tackle celebration dance) with Lupe Gonzales making 7 additional tackles. Ty Chambers and Eric Kendzior were trying their best to knock guys out of their cleats with bone jarring hits!

The Texan Offense again amassed over 250 yards with the Defense holding a previous potent Falcon Offense to just 2 First Downs. Nathan Redd led the way on the ground with over 120 yards rushing with David Terrebonne sweeping around the end for 62 yards and Lupe Gonzales punishing the middle for 37 yards. Caleb Longoria snagged 3 of Terrebonne’s passes for 25 yards to complete an impressive offensive performance. None of this would have been possible without Coach Rae’s HAWGS!!!!

After the game, Coach Terrebonne said he was about ready to put the Orange and White on these boys! That will be great … and it won’t be that long away!

We really have a great team. Not just the boys, but the Coaches, Team Moms, Support Staff and Parents. All together, pulling in the same direction, following the same Leadership, we can accomplish great things! One of the things that we should be the most proud of is that our boys are growing up to be great young men. They are surrounded by both Coaches and Daddies that encourage them to lay it all out on the field as well as excel in life. The case could be made that we would be failures as a Texan Organization if we won the Super Bowl, but allowed the boys to be disrespectful failures in School and in life. As one parent, I am glad my family is part of an organization that cares as much for the boys off the field as the do on the field. Let’s keep up the good work! That is what the Texan Family is all about!

This week we have the Alvin Yellowjackets swarming on our field. Let’s treat them well while they are here and send them home knowing what the Texan Family and Football Team is all about!

LaPorte Texans -vs- South Houston Wildcats

LaPorte Texans - 28 South Houston Wildcats - 0

Week Seven: LaPorte Texans –vs- SoHo Wildcats

Victory 28-0 Season Record – 7 wins 0 losses

What an awesome performance! After a somewhat shaky start, the Texans rolled over the South Houston Wildcats 28-0 this past Saturday morning. Coach Steve’s Defense not only held the Wildcats scoreless, it also held them to 0 first downs! What an awesome performance!

Can you believe our kick-off coverage? The Texans kicked the ball 5 times. Guess how many they covered and gave the ball back to the offense? Would you think one? How about two? Perhaps even three? Surely not four! Nope … they recovered all five kick-offs the Texans kicked! Coach Mark has coached his young men well! What an awesome performance!

The Offense was again a sight to behold. Limiting the playbook for the game, (Clear Lake Falcons were filming) the Offense rolled up 28 points! Coach Ron told the boys early in the week that if they scored 30 points there would be a surprise for them this week. He admitted after the game that by limiting the play book, he kept the Texans under 30, so the surprise is still going to be given. Everybody got into the action with sweep after sweep gobbling up yardage as the Texans marched down the field. What an awesome performance!

We are seven weeks into an outstanding season and the Texans are still undefeated. While the boys give their all on the field each game and every practice, as parents we owe a debt of gratitude to the Coaching Staff of the Sophomore Texans. It all starts at the top with the Texans Athletic Director Howard “HoJo” Johnson and flows through Coach Ron and their dedication to excellence and playing by the rules. It is no accident that the Texans weren’t caught up in all of the forfeits for ineligible or overweight players. Coach Ron has kept the Sophomore Texans within every letter of the law. He also has assembled a great group of coaches in Coach Rae, Coach Steve, Coach Mark, Coach Shane, Coach Steven and Coach Terrebonne. Not only do these men coach our sons in football, they truly care that each player grows up to be a good young men. They truly do care about these kids! Gentlemen, we as parents thank you for your hard work and dedication!

This next week we will be traveling to play the Clear Lake Falcons. They bring in an undefeated conference record with their only defeat being their opening game in a double overtime loss to the Clear Lake Space Raiders. This will be a hard fought game against a great team. This is an incredibly important game for the rankings through the playoffs. Remember parents, Cheer Hard, Cheer Loud and let them know we are part of the Texan Family!

LaPorte Texans -vs- Pasadena Bears

LaPorte Texans 25 Pasadena Bears 0

LaPorte Texans – Sophomore

Week Six: LaPorte Texans –vs- Pasadena Bears

Victory 25-0 Season Record – 6 wins 0 losses

If nothing else this year, the Texans are learning how to play on wet, muddy fields! The Texans ventured over to the Bears House this last Saturday and soundly defeated the Bears by the score of 25 – 0. The Texans Offense methodically drove the ball right at the Bears while the Defense all but totally shut the Bears down holding them to 2 first downs all game long. In six games the Texans Defense has only been scored on 1 time while the Offense of the Texans has rolled up 138 points! Can you say, ”TOTAL DOMINATION?????”

The swarming Texan Defense led by Lupe Gonazale’s 6 tackles, Eric Kendzior’s 4 tackles and Caleb Longoria’s 4 tackles rendered the Bears Offense ineffective. The whole defensive line funneled the ball carriers to these STUDS while Mason Lee and Ty Chambers swatted down anything that slipped outside. Coach Steve has honed these boys into a hard hitting defensive machine! Keep it up boys!

David Terrabone led the Texans Offense to over 300 yards in total offense. Coach Rae’s HAWGS (Offensive Line) led by Eric Kenzior, Ryder Rae, Zach Morales, Trevor Pugh, Paul Bob, Big John Navarro paved the way for 275 yards on the ground while passes from David Terrabone and Nathan Redd caught by Caleb Longoria and Austin Forkin provided 48 more yards of offense. The Offensive Unit posted 25 points on a tough Bears Defense. Coach Ron had his foot on the gas with this high octane offense and it is doubtful he will let up anytime soon!

On a personal note, after away games this year, have you ever wondered how visiting teams view our Texan Family when they leave our field? Let’s make sure that our Texan Family treats visiting teams and families with class, dignity and respect when they come to Texan Field. Greet our guests warmly, answer any questions they may have, encourage their boys to play well, never say disparaging words about a player or a team, and wish them a safe trip home. That’s not just good sportsmanship, that’s just good manners, and that is the Texan’s Way!
